"A rapid flooding of a geographically low-lying area."
Flash Flooding can be caused by almost any type of extreme rush of water in to low lying areas. The most common is strong thunderstorms and quick heavy rain showers. It can also be caused by none-severe weather. The most common none-severe weather event is a levee or a dam system breaking down.
Most deaths from flash flooding happen in cars at night. Most people that get caught in flash floods say "I never thought it would happen to me or that quickly." Safety tip from survivors... TURN AROUND, DON'T DROWNED!
Nothing can really be done to prevent flash flooding, but you can be aware of were you live and if your area could be affected by flash flooding. Find a safety plan for if you do get stuck in the middle of a flash flooding event. Keep your cool and be smart about what you do during the event. Also, If you know you are expecting heavy rain falls and you live in an area with the potential to flash flood, be ready for it. The National Weather Service is great at putting out the watches, but its up to you to use the knowledge that they provide.
